The Stratum Corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis and consists of flattened corneocytes, surrounded by multilamellar lipid membranes which are composed of cholesterol, free fatty acids, and ceramides. The skin barrier can be visualised as corneocytes representing the “bricks of a wall”, and the rich lipid matrix the “mortar”.
